Unichain delivers faster and cheaper transactions with enhanced interoperability in the DeFi ecosystem.
On February 11, 2025, Uniswap Labs officially launched Unichain, its new Layer 2 (L2) mainnet based on the Ethereum network. This move aims to advance decentralized finance (DeFi) by providing faster and more affordable transactions, as well as improved interoperability between different blockchain networks.

Faster and Cheaper Transactions
Unichain is built using the OP Stack from Optimism, significantly reducing transaction costs and processing times compared to Ethereum’s main chain. With a block time of one second, users can expect near-instant transactions, while costs are reduced by approximately 95% compared to Ethereum Layer 1. This makes DeFi applications more accessible and efficient for a broader user base.
Interoperability and Decentralization
Unichain is designed to be part of the Optimism Superchain, enabling seamless interoperability between different L2 networks. This allows users and developers easier access to liquidity and functionalities across multiple blockchain networks. Additionally, Uniswap Labs plans to introduce the Unichain Validation Network (UVN), which will allow anyone to verify blocks, further decentralizing the network and increasing its security.
Support for Developers and Users
During four months of testing, Unichain processed over 95 million transactions and enabled the deployment of more than 14.7 million smart contracts by the community. Over 100 popular crypto products and protocols, including Uniswap, Circle, Coinbase, Lido, and Morpho, are already building on Unichain, with many available from launch and additional projects expected in the coming weeks.
For developers, Unichain provides comprehensive documentation and tools for quickly launching applications, including creating custom logic for Uniswap v4 and integrating stablecoins like USDC. Users can fund their wallets, launch tokens, use new applications, and perform swaps and liquidity provisioning via the Uniswap web app and wallet.
Future Plans
Uniswap Labs plans to continue enhancing Unichain in the coming months. One of the planned upgrades includes the implementation of Flashbots’ Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), which will enable sub-second block times and improve transaction transparency. These innovations will further enhance the user experience and network efficiency.
With the launch of Unichain, Uniswap Labs aims to redefine the DeFi space by providing a faster, cheaper, and more interoperable platform for users and developers worldwide.
